Blog # 1 Technology Use in the Classroom

My personal philosophy of education is that primary and secondary education should serve the individual such that upon leaving secondary education the individual develops such attributes that makes he/she a functioning member of society.  This includes necessary attributes to do basic job skills, such as computer skills, English, and math.  These skills also include being able to socialize properly with others, being able to serve oneself in basic chores (such as going to the store and recognizing what the numbers mean), and skills needed to work cooperatively with others members of society in order to accomplish tasks both at home and work.  Also, teachers should serve the students such that their interests are peaked for further education (if they so desire), the student realizes the importance of the material he/she is learning, and current methods of teaching are up-to-date with society standards.

Since computers and technology are both a basic part of society in the U.S. today, teachers should strive to incorporate technology into there lesson and into the interaction that students have with different curricula in the classroom.  Technology, especially the more recent of which, can help the child in many different ways.  Learning math skills through the use of a computer programs (such as excel and interactive games) help students to familiarize themselves with computer technology and helps them in their learning process.  Also, technology can be useful for teachers because it can help them to peak students interests in a subject, and to get more answers to help continue a students interest in a subject.  For example, Power School helps parents to take a more active role in their child's education, which in turn helps the student to stay focus on school.

  1. Monica, I completely agree with you that it is going to be extremely beneficial to our students to incorporate technology into classroom curriculum because of its large presence in everyday life. Familiarizing themselves with a computer can help such basic things as taking a job as a cashier in which the person must use a computer to perform the functions of their position. I think it is also great that you stated teachers should use technology to increase student interest in the content material. We all know that the paper-and-pencil way of the past can be very tedious and boring for students, so bringing a new and unique style of learning involving a hands on approach such as using a computer, can really grasp our students attention and provide them with an opportunity to retain the material being conveyed.

  2. I also agree with your response. I think that in order for the students to become experts technology must also be available to the parents. With power school this also gives parents a chance to work with technology as well as promoting awareness at home.

  3. I think your understanding of technology use in education is consistent with your understanding of the purpose of education. As a "functioning member of society", you argue that people should have basic computer, English and math skills and be able to work together. What do you see as the role of teachers in ensuring that students develop their higher order thinking skills as well? Do you see technology playing a role there? And if so, how?

No response necessary, just some things to think about.
